MMS Meetings

May 12, 2008 Meeting

Presenter: Charles (Chuck) Miller

Presentation: "Collecting Experiences in Virginia and the Southeast"

Chuck received his B.S. and M.S. in geology from Wayne State University in 1970. He began his professional career with American Natural Resources (the "gas company") as a geologist working on the lignite mine in North Dakota that supplies the Nation's first (and only) commercial coal gasification project. In 1979, he was transferred by ANR to Roanoke, Virginia to take up the duties of manager of exploration and development for a newly acquired coal company with reserves throughout Appalachia. In all, he spent 26 years in the energy and environmental business sectors. During that time he gained his professional geologist certifications in Virginia and Kentucky and served on the Virginia Board of Geology. He retired from the business world in 2000 to become a geology instructor at a local community college. He retired for good in 2007 and moved back to Michigan (are you crazy?) and now lives on Harsens Island.

Chuck has been a member of the MMS since the late 60's. He has served as secretary to the Friends of Mineralogy and was one of the founders of the Southeastern Chapter of FM.

He will share with us his collecting experiences at many of the collecting mines, quarries, and sites in Virginia. It will be an interesting and informative evening. Furthermore, anyone wanting to go South to collect will greatly benefit from his program.
